ALCOHAL CAUSE OF CANCER

The **U.S. Surgeon General** has advised that **warning labels** be placed on alcohol bottles to inform consumers about the potential risk of cancer. Dr. **Vivek Murthy** highlighted that there is solid scientific evidence showing alcohol as a cancer-causing agent, yet many Americans remain unaware of the threat. As Surgeon General, he feels it is his duty to educate the public about this risk. All forms of alcohol are linked to cancer, and sellers will need to include clear warning labels on their products. In the U.S., health warning labels on alcohol haven't been updated since 1987, which only mentions alcohol consumption risks for pregnant women. For the Surgeon General's recommendation to take effect, it must be approved by **Congress**. The **American Association for Cancer Research** reports that alcohol intake is associated with six types of cancer, including those of the breast, liver, stomach, and colon.

Currently, just **25% of countries** around the globe require health warnings on alcohol, with **South Korea** being the only nation to include a specific warning about **liver cancer** on alcohol containers.
